Physicals Q & A

What are physicals?

Physicals are examinations that you undergo to check your overall health and well-being. Whereas you normally visit your doctor when you’re suffering from illness or injury, an annual physical is a review of all aspects of your health that helps to identify the first signs of any underlying health problems. That way, you can get the treatment you need as soon as possible.

This is particularly important in regard to conditions like high blood pressure, which can lead to life-threatening health problems, such as heart attack and stroke, but doesn’t cause any symptoms to warn you there’s something wrong.

Serious conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes also cause few symptoms until they reach a critical stage, so picking up the early signs of these diseases at a physical is a vital way to prevent life-threatening illnesses from developing.

What happens during a physical?

When you go for your physical at Altus Medical Care, your provider reviews your medical history and discusses your current and recent health with you. You can tell them about any symptoms you’ve been experiencing, no matter how minor they may seem, and ask questions about anything that’s concerning you.

After your discussion, your provider carries out some tests and investigations to look for signs of health problems. First, they check your blood pressure and heart rate, and listen to your heartbeat, then look at your respiration rate and listen to your lung sounds. Next, they check your physical reflexes and how well you react to what’s going on around you, checking for signs of physical deterioration and mental health problems.

They also examine your:

  • Throat and tonsils
  • Ears
  • Nose
  • Sinuses
  • Eyes
  • Lymph nodes
  • Thyroid
  • Teeth and gums
  • Liver
  • Bowel sounds
  • Muscle strength
  • Nerve responses
  • Balance
  • Skin, hair, and nails
  • Joints
  • Genitals

After a thorough physical examination, your provider requests any routine tests, such as a blood workup and urine test, to check for infection and measure your blood sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as specific tests if they’ve seen any signs that need investigating.

What other tests might I need for a physical?

The Altus Medical Care team has access to in-house laboratory facilities that ensure a fast turnaround of results, so you won’t have to wait long to find out if there’s anything amiss. They also have in-house EKG (electrocardiogram) testing facilities with which they can make an in-depth analysis of your heart function.

Women can have their Pap smear if it’s due, and you can also receive immunizations and booster vaccines at your physical.

If you haven’t been for a physical for a while, schedule one at Altus Medical Care by calling the office today, or using the online booking tool.
